CRPS Type 1 - Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)

Old women having Continuous Burning, Stabbing or Throbbing PainPreviously labeled Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy or RSD, CRPS Type 1 is caused by a tissue injury without any nerve damage. Reflex sympathetic dystrophy causes lasting pain in the involved extremity after injuries, sprains, fractures, or even surgery.

Did you know the pain associated with CRPS Type 1 or Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy can often be worse than the original injury itself? It can also lead to many physical and emotional symptoms. Physical symptoms commonly begin at the site of the injury and may gradually spread to other parts of the body. There is no known cure for CRPS although it has been shown that the advancement of medical technology and new treatment techniques make it easier to control the symptoms of pain associated with this potentially devastating condition. It is recommended to start treatment as early as possible to prevent symptoms of the condition from worsening. CRPS remission is possible to achieve!

Treating CRPS Type 1

Scrambler Pain TherapyCRPS Treatment Center uses a combination of therapies and techniques to assist in the management of pain relating to CRPS/RSD. Scrambler Pain Therapy (Calmare) is an FDA-approved electro-cutaneous treatment that helps manage the symptoms of the neuropathic pain associated with CRPS/RSD. This non-invasive therapy disrupts pain signals by delivering electrical stimulations, interpreted as “no pain” by the nervous system. The treatment consists of placing small electrodes directly on the injury site for about half an hour and using algorithms to transmit a non-pain message to the nerve. On the average, a 10 visit treatment protocol is recommended (although the needs of each patient may vary). The frequency of treatment is recommended to be 5x/week for 2 weeks then reassessed for additional treatment.

After successful treatment, the patient may require follow-up sessions to maintain the results. These are known as booster treatments (avg. 2-4). Pain relief may vary from patient to patient as could the time associated with the relief. It is not uncommon for the relief to last upwards to 6-8 months or more.

Additionally, utilizing both mechanical and manual therapy techniques (including vagus nerve stimulation), CRPS Treatment Center works to restore balance to the Central Nervous System which is essential in the road to remission for a CRPS/RSD patient.
